Hi - Well, this is my first attempt. I would much appreciate suggestions!
I have a couple of questions for the experts - one, how can you make the texture on the base curve to look more real. And, two - how to create the shadow behind the whole globe and base.
Thanks!

Hi Betsy ...
Oh you did really well with that !! it looks very good :)
Now to make the texture look more real ... I think that I would experiment with using more dodge and burn. Take a look at the tutorial Making a Simple Globe Base Step F.
To do the shadow you will need to create the shadow on its own layer ... there is another tutorial in the same section called "Casting a Shadow". Take a look at then and it should help you to do it.
If you get stuck then just let me know :)

Please help,
I have made several attempts to try to make this "SIMPLE globe". I do fine until I get to the last step (step 10). My highlight layer does not fill in with color. I am (almost) sure I followed the step 8 correctly. My final product looks great except for the highlight layer which does not fill in with color.
Can anyone try to figure out what I am doing wrong?
This does not surprise me, it seems everthing I try is to no avail.
Thank you

Hi Mary ...
Step 10 is filling the background with a colour ... creating the highlight layer and distorting it are steps 5,6 and 7 and then 8 blurs it slightly.
Do you mean that the blue (as I used in my example) doesn't show through the highlight layer at all ??
Only thing I can think of is did you use a white to transparent gradient to create it? as the blue will only show through where the transparent part is.
Why not take a screenshot of your image and the layers palette and post it on Pixentral. If you need any help doing that then just let me know and I will talk you through it ..

Yes, I do mean that the blue does not show throught the highlight layer at all.
Oh, I see where I went wrong (I think) in step 5, when we are to change the gradient to Linear Gradient, then I think we are to set the foreground colour to white, (which I did) then in the gradient "edit" are we to set "foreground to transparent", is this correct (I did not do this), is this the same as your instructon to set "white to transparent"?
Please bare with me, I am trying to understand. I so appreciate your help.
Thank you!

Hi Mary ...
Yes you need to set your foreground colour to white and then choose foreground to transparent. ... that is indeed what I mean by white to transparent :)
You should be able to just discard the existing highlight layer, create a new one and do the highlight again ... look forward to seeing your globe :)

Got it, finally. With me one has to be very specific.
Now to drag in an image; wow, that will be interesting.
Thank you so much for all you help.
I am taking the layers training. It all looks so wonderful when Matt does it, but when I try it is a disaster. I am still trying to figure out when I am to select;deselect. When to add new layers and all about the adjustment/masks, ets. Hopefully, it will all come together and I will evenutally see the light.
Thank again, I am sure this will not be the last time you hear from me.

Mary ...
Oh don't worry about it ... it all seems complicated when you start using Elements but it gets a lot easier. It won't take long for you to ge the hang of it and if you get stuck with anything then just ask ... there is always someone around who will help :)
Once you have added something to your globe ... do let us see it :)
