View Full Version : Feeling dumb again!

I decided to start the layers course today as now back from holidays. Now I see they signed me up on 15 June so I only have until 16 August to do the course. I had said I would let them know when I returned from vacation but I guess they misunderstood. So unless they can extend for me I will just have to hurry through. What I don't understand is the second part where it says you can download. Where do you download that to? I thought from reading other threads that you could do the same lesson that Matt was working on yourself. I read the FAQ but cannot find anything about downloading and working on the same images as Matt. Is there any way of saving these lessons? Thanks anyone.

Shari,
Call customer service. They will give you an extension. The download should be in the same area as the lesson link. You'll see a link to start the video, a link to the PDF file, and a link to the downloads.

Hi Shari ...
Don't panic :)
Just give customer service a ring and explain what has happened ... The Customer Service number is: 1-866-808-2793 ..
Next thing is you can download the images that go with the class ... that is what the download refers to. Just sign on to the class then below where you click to watch the video you will see
ZIP ... Lesson downloads (thats the images)
Adobe PDF ... Follow along outline
Saving the lessons isn't an option anymore ...

Thanks - I will call customer service. I did e-mail Jef but I will also call. Now, this is where I feel dumb. I did find the download OK. It is just when I download and the file shows as day 1. I unzip it - those are the files. Do I put those into my editor to work on them? Is there a place I should save the downloaded files to? -- And while I am here - it didn't work when I brought my own images into the photo bin and hit the move tool and dragged into other photo. Now I was working on one of my own and it gets confusing because I have another layer as I always do Ctrl J and I had an layer for my initials. Sorry I tend to go on but I am sure I will eventually figure this all out. We have a heat wave here and it is hard to think straight. No air conditioning in private homes in Vancouver because this 35 - 40 does not happen often. Probably not the best time to be learning.

Hi Shari ...
We have the same problem here too ... far too hot to learn.
Now lets looks at each one ...
The downloaded image ... just keep them in a folder somewhere on your hard disk ... you just need to keep them somewhere handy so that you can use them to try out the class. Just use them as you would any other image.
Its best to start with if you practise on just a single layer jpg but if you do want to drag one layer of a multi layered file into another image then go to the layer palettem select the right layer. Make sure that auto select layer isn't ticked and then use the move tool as Matt shows in the classes. That should then work just fine :)
Hope things soon get a little cooler for you ...

Thank you Wendy. I will try again when my head is clear. I decided to burn my photos onto a disc so I could delete them from my camera. Now the DVD tray is stuck and will not open. I have tried everything that has been suggested to me by HP on lkine help and even uninstalled the drive and reinstalled. Now I may have to replace the DVD drive. It is still under warranty but it is the pain and inconvenience of the whole thing. This has not been a good day. I thank you though because I print out the answers and put them in my binder for future use.

Shari,
Don't know if you have tried this way of opening a stuck tray. Here goes: There should be a very tiny hole (it's hard to see) somewhere on the face of your DVD drive cover. If you find the hole take a paper clip and bend it open and insert it into that hole. Have your computer on of course. It should open your tray.
If you have already tried this method and it still has not worked, then there must be some internal problem with the drive.

Wendy, maybe it was the heat because I just turned on my computer and the tray opened!!! Thanks Dorrie. We had done that with the paper clip and got the tray open but then it didn't close properly and when I tried to eject it would not work. I uninstalled the drive and reinstalled and maybe by leaving it off all day it finally worked. Computers can be the most wonderful machines when everything is working but THE most frustrating when things go wrong and the inconvenience of taking it in for repairs and the $$$ start to add up in your mind. I couldn't be without it - but there are times I would like to smash it.
And Wendy I just got on the computer now at 10:30 PM and it is still stiffiling hot in this room. A fan on and an ocean breeze which is doing nothing. I really hate it. Can't think or concentrate. I know you have got it over there because I called my 97 year old Tante in Basel Switzerland this morning and she said it was in the high 30's in her condo. Not to complain mind you - just trying to explain why I can't seem to get very creative with any of my new photos at the moment. Any why I haven't been around.
Shari (Sorry - bit long)

Hi Shari ...
Very glad to hear that the tray is working :)
Oh it has been dreadful here ... we have had temperature of up to 36 degrees and its very humid too. Saturday we had thunderstorms was cooler but the forcast is that its going to get hot again.
During the afternoon the sun streams into the study and it is just unbearable ... so I close the curtains and work in the dark  Its really unpleasant and I have had enough .... :(

Hey Wendy,
When I'm talking about hot weather I'm experiencing 112 degrees Fahrenheit, which I believe would be about 45 degrees celsius, right? Well that's what is has be here for me. The worst part is that you can't even rely on having electric power to keep your house cool. Last two days have lost power and the inside of my house got up to 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
I'm dying.....:D:twisted::D

Hi Dorrie ...
Oh that is hot !! ..
The temperature here today is about 95 degrees.
Most places here don't have airconditioning ... just some of the larger stores. We normally need warming up not cooling down :D: . So like you we are stting indoors and roasting ...

Dorrie, you're in Concord? My sister and her family live in Antioch. I was wondering how hot it was in that area. I'm in Huntington Beach about one mile from the ocean, it's 10 AM and it's 83* right now. A few days ago I was in Yosemite where it was 112*. Russ

Well it is not as hot here in Vancouver but it is way way too hot for me. We get an ocean breeze in our condo and right now it is about 86 in the house but it is still morning. I just took the dog out and it is unbearable outside. For Vancouver Canada to be in the 30's is hot and as I say no air conditioning in houses. Yesterday I had a dentist appointment and stayed downtown in the malls until 5:00 when Ron picked me up in an air conditioned car - but when we got home our condo was a hotbox. So I am finding it hard to do my course (which was the original start of this thread - and they have extended my expiry date to september - so thank you). (and Ifigured out how to download the images - so thank you again Wendy). Mind you - not complaining too much - just glad to be alive and there are certainly worse things happening in the world then the weather!

Colleen, If you have an HP and go into troubleshooting it is amazing how much information you can find. That is how I found out about the paper clip and the little hole - and it does work. However it has not fixed my DVD. Sometimes it will open and sometimes not. Funniest thing. It usually works when I first turn on the computer. Have also had that happen with my scanner and my camera card. If my computer has been on for quite a while I have to restart to get them to work. I honestly cannot be bothered to find out why. Now our HDTV is not working and Shaw says it is the signal (Spend nearly $1,000. on a PVR box and the signal isn't working) They say we might have too much equipment in one room. We had a custom cabinet built so everything fits along one wall in our den. All this new technology and the changes can drive one crazy. The other day I said to my husband - I will not sweat over burning my photos to a DVD because they will be obsolete soon!!!! (It's OK I have done it now) Sorry didn't mean to write a book. Because I have typed for nearly 50 years of my life I find it like talking - maybe too much at times.
