I think I read this somewhere, but hoping someone knows. Is there a way to eliminate the checkerboard pattern from a layer so that, for example, when you reduce the opacity of the layer, you can see what you will get (WYSIWYG) instead of a checkerboard overlay? Thanks!

try saving your image as a gif.

Thank Norm - I meant prior to saving - while editing. It comes out fine when saved as a jpg.

Not sure why, but here is how.

Go to Preference > Transparency

There you will finds some pull down menus and under that two square. click on the square and put them to the colour you want. Putting them to the same colour will well make the squares disappear.

Almost forgot if you want a white background the top menu has an option for that.

Preferences>Transparency and set grid size to none might also do what you want.

Thanks Grant and Tony! Gid size 'none' did the trick - probably same result as matching the grid colors. Now I'm afraid I'll miss something without the grid there, but hopefully I'll remember to turn it on when I need it. :D

White is good but if you are going to display it on the web it may be nice to see it against the colour you desire also if your main image is white another colour can show you a contrast and make separating images easier. Like all things in Elements there are so many options to make it easy to do it your way.

Thanks - forgot about that part. In this case there is a layer behind it so the white won't become a background. That's the part I'm afraid I'll forget though!
