Robyn,
I was wondering about "Bulldust", thinking perhaps it would need an explanation - what do you think, should I try to explain?

Karen,
as always, great!!
I love Bulldust, so colourful, but what's it like in rainy weather?

Kev,
In wet weather, bulldust turns to pure mud and the road can be closed for weeks at a time!! If you are caught driving on a road that is officially closed, it cost about $500 per tyre on the road!! Imagine one of the road trains - it could cost a small fortune! If we were caught with our ute and caravan (duel wheel) it would cost us $4000

Karen, I have two favorites -- Bull Dust and the koala! Wonderful selection of photos! I have been to Emerald Lake in Yukon Territory, so enjoyed seeing your picture. I have some pictures of it that people don't believe are real. They all think I've over-enhanced the color, but it's the true color. It's an amazing lake!

Beautiful, Karen! I think I like the Room with a View best -- or maybe Emerald Lake -- or maybe...

Karen; The photos are great especially bulldust. Your story about
not driving during the rainy weather really blows my mind...How do you travel if that road is closed?? I also need help with translation 'road train','ute' ?
Emerald lake looks so tranquil....Tom..:)

Those are some great shots of Canada as well as the road. Why do they close the road?

Karen,
Bulldust is wow, a road in the outback. I would call that the ultimate 2 track, makes our unpaved roads look tame. From your discription, it's a very fine red clay dust, ancient lakebed sediments perhaps.:)
Tom,
I think "road train" might be the same as an 18 wheeler or semi. The ute must be a type of "off road" vehicle. :)

Robyn,
The fan is make using Vizros plugin filter. I had to fiddle with it a bit to get it just right but I am pleased with the end result.

Linda,
Thanks for the kind words. Emerald Lake is not in the Yukon but in Canada somewhere between Banff and Lake Louise. We were amazed by the brilliant colours of the water.

Tom,
If a road is closed you do not travel! If you live in an area prone to road closure you always make sure you have plenty of provisions on hand to get you through. When we are travelling in the outback, we always have an emergency pack that contains enough food for a week and this is not touched until we are very nearly home! Yes we have been rained in – we went to Mt Augustus (397kms from Carnarvon on the coast and 349kms from Meekatharra) travelling up the inland road to Meekatharra (all bitumen) and then across to Mt Augustus (all dirt). We were very lucky to get into Mt Augustus because there had been some rain and the road was bad. Once in at Mt Augustus, there was about 12mm (1/2 inch) of rain and all the roads were closed for a week!! We were not even allowed to drive in the caravan park!! Once the roads were open, we were one of the first out and travelled over very, very bad dirt roads to get to the Overlander Roadhouse and back to the bitch (bitumen). Michael drove the whole 510kms and it was a hair raising drive!! We were very glad to get back onto a sealed road!! The following map shows how and where we went – all the double red lines are unsealed roads and the dotted red lines are bush tracks, while the solid red lines are either major highways or sealed roads.

A road train is a prime mover with at least two trailer and can be up to four trailers. If you are travelling with a caravan, the road train is likely to pass you and that is a whole new experience – if you are not careful the caravan gets sucked towards the road train as it passes!!
A ute is the equivalent to your pick-up truck.
Sorry this is so long :D

Nancy,
The roads are closed because when they become pure mud, any vehicle travelling on them just churns them up and as they start to dry out, leave deep ruts ruining the road. Driving on a deep rutted road is awful because you have to follow the ruts no matter where they lead :D

Great gallery Karen, not only excellent photos but educational too. In the photo "Signs Across the Nullabor" what is the animal between the camel and the roo at the top? Also, how bad is the camel problem in Australia? I heard the population is getting somewhat out of control.

imagine the vastness of the country and the extremes of city vs. outback.
Thanks again for map and the narative.

Steven,
It is a wombat. In all the travelling we have done around Australia, we have never seen many camels but, yes I do believe they are getting to be quite a problem in some areas. Glad you enjoyed my gallery.

Like the rainbow picture.
Is it light in the upper part because of missing pixels (over exposure), OR is it intended as is ?
