ctrl-click in PSE 4.0...

Okay,

I've been trying like crazy to get ctrl-click in the layers pallet in PSE 4.0 to put the marching ants around the object on that layer, but it doesn't do it. It just selects and then deselects that layer in the layers pallet. I remember seeing in the "What's New" video that ctrl-clicking on a layer in the layers pallet will add that layer to the list selected layers (like when you multiple select files in Windows Explorer).

In PSE 3.0, on the other hand, it works fine - I ctrl-click and the object or textg on the layer gets the marching ants. Did they change the key combination in PSE 4.0? This is driving me crazy!

I think with PSE 4 you have to click directly on the thumbnail to get the selection. Might be worth a try -- in PSE 3 anywhere ctrl+click.

Thanks. I'll try that later (when I can get on that computer) and see what happens. It is really frustrating. I kind of prefer the old PSE 3.0 way. They should have done shift-click or something for adding layers.

That's wierd. It works for me in PSE4. Ctrl click on the later thumbnail does what select layer transparency did in PSE3. If you don't do it on the thumbnail it selelcts/deselects the layer. If you're not getting this to happen when you control click the thumbnail then it sounds like soemthing is wrong.

You have to Ctrl click in the thumbnail inside the layer. Not on just the layer itself. I have found when I am trying to do something easy like a stroke. I make sure I am on the layer and hit Ctrl A. Gets the marching ants every time.

That was it! Just tried it a bit ago, and it worked when I ctrl-clicked on the thumbnail. I tested it on several different layers (masks, text, shapes, pictures, etc.) and it worked everytime.

Now I can sleep at night :)

Yes! I must have ctrl-clicked like crazy the other day. I tried many combinations, like shift-click, alt-click, shift-ctrl-click, shift-alt-click, ctrl-alt-click, etc. One time I got the ants, but I was paying attention to my finger combinations, not where I clicked on the layer in the layer pallet. Duh!

Glad you got it. What bugs me is that in PSE3 I always do it by right clicking on the thumbnail and using the "select layer transparency" option. In PSE4 for some reason they took that way of doing it away.
