Hello - Layers Class 19 shows how to change the color of something by adding a new layer, changing normal to color, selecting the color, painting the area and, if needed, lowering the opacity. When I took the class it worked perfectly with the practice pictures that came with the lesson. However, when I tried to change the color of the sky in the photo below, it showed the color I wanted in the layers pallet but in the work area the sky was only changed slightly. I can change the sky using other selections [normal for example] but it's not working as the class said it would. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - Russ

Russ, since the sky looks to be pure white I find that using the color blend mode doesn't work well. I think it has to do with white reflecting all colors. If you want to paint the sky in try the multiply or darken mode with a low opacity brush. Hope that helps.

Here's another thing that mystifies me. After my last post/question I tried it again. This time I wasn't as careful and painted a section of the wave. That section changed color, but the sky doesn't - Russ

Hello Terry, thanks for your help. You must have replied to my question seconds before my second post. So, changing normal to color doesn't work with white? I didn't know that. You were correct, changing to multipy did the trick but it's not the same effect that color gives us [with colors other than white].

I've been making montages for people I know at the beach [my sons, grandkids, friends and friends of friends]. I decided I'd make one out of some pictures I have of myself. Below is my first try, I'm not happy with it so I will make some changes. One of the changes I have in mind is to change the sky from [mostly] white to the sky that's in the background. Last March I hurt my knee so I can't surf [until it fully recovers]. Doing these PSE projects keeps me from going crazy - Russ

Russ,
I had come to the same conclusion about your color mode, but Terry beat me to the punch in answering you. It's obvious you now know how to fix a photo. Nice job on the montage. Sky looks great.

I think that what you are observing goes to the nature of the Color Blend Mode.

From what I have read, the result of this blend has the brightness or darkness of the base or original color, but the hue and saturation of the new or blend color.

I suspect that the photo in Layers Class 19 had a brightness/darkness comparable to the paint color you had selected.

Check it out, if you start with a light green and try to change that to a dark red; and, if you start with a dark green and try to change that to a light red.

Thanks for the info. Right now I'm working on lesson 21 [layers class]. When that's completed I'll try your suggestions. There's so much to learn about PSE, I'm working at it - Russ

Nice montage Russ, sorry to here about your knee, hope it heals quickly. Atr gave a good explanation for the color mode, I knew how it worked just couldn't explain it well.
