I am having problems with PE 4.0 crashing when I try to save an image that I've been working on as a jpg. No jpg gets greated and PE just shuts down. I have the image saved as a psd file so don't lose it, and save it this way before the Save As jpg - but need the jpgs for sending to others.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.7

Any help would be appreciated - thanks

When strange things start to happen, begin with repairing the permissions. Then, if you still have the problem, quit Elements, then relaunch, this time holding the Command - Option - Shift key. Answer yes, this will trash your preferences.

Report back if this doesn't solve your problem.

Thanks for the quick help.

I repaired permissions - no change in behaviour.

I removed the settings with the relaunch Command-Option-Shift. Same problem.

I was able to save the image successfully in Photoshop pdf and tiff formats, also jpg 2000. It just seems to be the basic jpg format that causes the crash.

Additional information - the original image was a jpg. I saved it as a psd file after doing some editing on it. If I don't do that - just save it as a jpg - i.e. a straight Save - no problem.

This sounds like a crazy question... But, what is your screen resolution? It must be at least 1024 x 768.

There maybe a problem with the image file then (the way I understand it is that it's only affecting one image, right ?)

Did you know that Preview can save images too? Open your PSD in Preview, then chose File / Save As... change the format to JPEG and save it. Maybe Preview will fix this issue.

Ray - many thanks for your help.

Using Preview as the "image converter" solved the problem - I was able to open the psd image and Save As jpg. A small extra step but no problem. I didn't know this about Preview.

The difficulty occurred with 4 images from a digital camera that I was 2 copies away from the original so problems with the image files may have krept in during copying.

My problem is solved for now - you've been very generous with your help - much appreciated.

Glad I was able to help :)

Preview can do a lot of things, such as open multiple images at the same time, and show thumbnail in a small drawer. Also show all the images in a animated GIF. Most importantly, you can use it to apply a colour profile to an image (a tool found in big Photoshop, at a much higher price too). You can even use the File / Grab command to make a very useful screen capturing software!

...and it's free, with the OS :D
