How does one resize their image without losing much photo quality?

Do you want it bigger or smaller?

I would like it bigger

Unfortunately, photoshop is a raster program which means if you try to make an image bigger it is going to have to fill in "extra" pixels by guessing which isn't very efficient. You can make your images a bit larger, but not significantly without severe loss in quality.

increase by 10% per size increase.

Click Image>Resize, and input "110%" into both the height & width boxes. Repeat as often as needed to get to the size you want.

PS has a weird quirk in that when you increase the size in 10% intervals, there is minimal quality loss. Why? Something to do with the algorythym that draws the pixels.

use it to your advantage! Increase in small chunks instead of trying to chug down the whole thing at once.

(BTW, HandyActions! (http://www.graficalicus.com/graffishop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=1) has this trick in action format - called "110% Blast!" - for Elements - just drag it over your image as often as needed  )

I wasn't aware of that graf.

What is the quality loss?

Hi Gale

What are the relative sizes you want... Perhaps you could post an example here and we will try to increase the size and you will get a good idea how and what you can expect with the results.

quality - minimal. Really!

try it - you can *almost* blow a standard digital photo (2000px) up to billboard size without much loss - but it will definitely depend on the input image (a low res starting image will obviously still be a low-res large image_

Grafi,
Have you ever run across the problem of resizing too many times?
I had this happen once and PSE said the photo was too big to work with.

Chas ...

How big did yout try to make it

On a serious note the maximum size you can do in Elements is 30,000 pixels by 30,000 pixels .. so at 300 resolution thats just over 8 foot by 8 foot. :)

heh! yeah - what Wendy said. You definitely can go too big. I've got this action hooked up in PS with a keyboard shortcut, and a few too many flicks of the thumb really slow my system down...

Wendy,
It was a photo of an eared grebe. It was too small to print and I went overboard with the 10% increases. PSE3 said it was too big to work with. I may be able to find it and let you know just how big it is.

You probably went over the size limit :)
