Hi ...
... and welcome to the forum :)
Well I suppose that the first thing is how much do you want to spend and what distance do you need to need to photpgraph things from (long distances, very close etc) ??
Then I would suggest that you actually go into a camera shop and ask to see some of the cameras ... I find that to be the best way to decided which one you like.
When you have done that and have chosen a camera then its time to start looking at where to buy it from.
Which part of the country are you in?

Hi there.
There's nothing like going into a shop and getting the feel of the equipment even if you come away and then go and buy online. Before you do that, prepare a list of questions. Ask yourself what you need your camera for, what sort of shots you'll be taking, do you need interchangeable lenses etc. (if you are into nature photos you may want to consider something that has a macro lens for instance) If you particularly like the feel of something ask as many questions as you want....you don't want to be saddled with something with so many features that you won't use them all, on the other hand you don't want to realise in a year's time that maybe you should have gone for a less basic model.

PS. I also had Yashica SLR....after much deliberation changed to a Canon digital SLR a couple of years ago, but not before I spent a lot of time in the local photography shops trying things out!

I prefer to "shop" online and then visit the local retailer and give them the opportunity to match the price. Most often, they will. It's nice to have the support locally if you ever need help with the camera after the initial purchase. Something to think about.

To get reviews and ratings on cameras of all makes and models, check out this web site:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/
To find out where the best store and price is, check the camera make and model on Best Buys. Stores athat have four stars are reliable; just find the store with the most stare and the lowest price and you have it!
Here is Best Buys Web Site - just enter the Name (i.e. Canon), Model (i.e. A-500) and click go.

If this is your first camer, youhave to decide if fmost of your photography is going to be general or nature. For general photography, a 3X zoom should be fine.
Good luck!
