I just purchased PSE 4.0 and installed it on my PC (xp os).
Whenever I open a photo from my hard drive, PSE 4.0 opens automatically, and the the photo is shown in PSE 4.0.
I want to view the photos without PSE.
How do I keep PSE from opening automatically?
Thanks for any suggestions.

ivicter,
Go to your control panel and select "folder options." On the "file types" tab locate your image file extensions (jpg, jpeg, etc.) Select a file extension and then click the "change" button. Select the program you want to use to open the selected file.
You may also be able to right click your image files, select "open with" or "properties" depending on how your file system is set up and make the necessary changes from there.

I can tell you how to do this on a PC, but I'm not sure how to do it on a Mac. Right click on an image file you wish to open. Choose "Open with..." and then "Choose Program..." Click on the program you want to use to open the file (ie. I've chosen Windows Picture and Fax Viewer), and then click the box below that says "Always use the selected program to open this type of file."
If there are several types of files now associated with PSE (jpgs, tiffs, pdfs, etc.), you'll have to do this with every type of file, but you should only have to do it once for each type.
BTW, I think the Organizer within PSE 4.0 is well worth the time it takes to learn how to use it, so if you aren't absolutely in love with your current system of managing photos, give it a try. I mention it because I now view almost all photos from within PSE's Organizer.

Norm,
Thanks for your help. It worked & I can now selectively choose the opening program.
I am really impressed with this forum.

Carolyn,
Thanks, I am now back in control. This group is a great resource.
I have been organizing my digital photos (~ 8,000 images)for the last 5 years on my hard drive. I first catorgorize them by year and then by subject within each year. It mainly consists of my travels. I also have an external hard drive & back up all the pictures.
I travel with an Epson P 2000 portable hard drive (40gb) & download my chip every evening to a file for that day. This allows me to start with a clean chip each day. When I return home I download the P 2000 files to my PC under the trip file name & in the current year.
It seems to work so far but I am going to explore the PSE Organizer & see what it has to offer.
Thanks for your help & suggestions
Ira
