Layers tutorial

I've been working on the on-line layers tutorial and have learned a lot! I haven't had any problems working with the Brush and Eraser tools, until today. I don't know what I did wrong but when I select these tools, instead of getting an open round circle, the size of the brush, to work with I get a little crosshair-type tool that doesn't change in size when I make the brush bigger or smaller. Where did my circle go?
Also, I've noticed on every tutorial I've ever watched that everyone else's picture of the brush currently being used has ends of the brush that come to a nice point. Mine are always stubby ends. I know this probably isn't important but it's buggin' me. What's up?

In answer to your second question ... when you have a wacom table attached to your computer the brushes icons show points ...

So thats probably the difference you are seeing :)
