View Full Version : adding patterns

I'm confused. :( I down loaded the extra patterns from this site into my documents, then unzipped them and transferred them to a folder named extra patterns, in the patterns folder in elements. Everything went fine until I went to load the patterns. I would like to load then under the folder name, so that I don't have a list of 20 separate patterns. It wouldn't allow me to do this. I had to pick each file separately and when I loaded it, it went in whatever folder was open. So how do I give this file a separate name and load them in their own folder called additional patterns?? I'm sure I am missing some simple step, but can't figure out what I am doing wrong!!

Pauline,

I'm a little confused by your message so I'm not sure if I have it right or not ... So lets start from the beginning ... do you mean the AFX patterns?

OK so you have downloaded them and unzipped them
Then put them in a "extra patterns" folder in Elements under Presets>Patterns
If you do to the paint bucket and change the fill from foreground to pattern then click on the pattern section .. when the drop down box opens you can then access the other pattern sets, including the AFX ones.

Even though you put them in another folder the folder will not show when you access them via Elements ... they will all show up as individual pattern sets.

This is simply how Photoshop works ... clicking on any of them will just replace the current pattern set. You can, if you wish, put the patterns somewhere else (outside the Elements Folder) and then use Load Patterns from the same drop down box.

 I can't believe it!!!!!!!! There they are!!! Okay. I guess when I put them in the folder I didn't have to do the "load" thing to them. I was going under edit> fill background and then looking for them and they weren't there. I guess when I exited out and went on again they appear. You are right they are all separate. I will deal with it!!! Thanks so much. Maybe tomorrow I will be brave and try downloading the brush set off this site! LOL At least I know if I screw something up, help is not far away.

Thanks so much Wendy!!! Now I'd better go and walk the dog or I'll spend the rest of the night on the forums! It sure is nice to have some daylight @ 7:00!!!

Pauline,

Anytime you add something into Elements you need to close it down and then restart Elements before you can see the things you added ... I forgot to tell you that :(

Glad it has turned out OK ... I know what you mean about spending the rest of the night on the forum. Its gone midnight and I'm still here :)

Let me know how you go on with the brushes!

Thanks Wendy! Dare I try the brushes now? LOL It's already 8:00. I sure am loving the new time change with more day light.

well I loaded the brushes I wanted-----------no problem!! Now that leads me to another question. I was using the corner brushes on each side of a picture. Is there a way to turn the brush around, or do I have to use a different one for each corner? The one I was experimenting with two "top pieces". Just so I don't sound completely dumb, I do have a special brush I made with my signature!! LOL Now that one is cool!!

That is the end of down loading for me!! Already way too much on photoshop for me as it is!! I was just afraid that if I didn't do it, one day they would be gone. And of course you always want something when you can't have it.

Pauline,

You can change the angle of brushes .... so if there are not four matching corners in the brushes set:

click on the brush tool then look at the top of your screen and you will see a section that says more options
click on that and you will be able to change your brush in various ways.

thanks Wendy. That's perfect. Gave it a try already!! Why didn't I notice that button there before??? I knew it had to be something simple!!

Last night while trying to get to sleep, I thought perhaps it was the move to and then use free transform, but resisted the need to get up, turn the computer back on and try it!!

Just when it starts to feel like I'm making some head way I discover there is just so much to learn!! Good thing it's fun learning. I was playing around last night with styles and brushes and just having a good time. The picture didn't matter. I wasn't working on anything, just exploring the possibilites. Taking the pressure off by not trying to do anything in particular makes it a lot easier.

Pauline,

I find that simply playing around is a great way to learn ... and there are lots of buttons to explore in Elements :)
