I have been doing the layers class and the digital workflow classes together. I just want to learn this program! Anyway, I feel stumped with a basic feature now...bring photos onto my background layer! When I move a photo from my photo bin onto my background layer, the new photo becomes its own background layer and is locked. I can't seem to just move the photos from the photo bin to make the collage as in class 20. I have done this before so I really don't know what I am doing wrong now! I am having a brain freeze and need to have it thawed!

First thing you need to do is take a deep breath and relax. We have all been there.....actually I know how to do that but can't think of how right now... . Many times, I just open the one and duplicate the layer into the other.....I know that is not the RIGHT way, but it works for me and I like having a solid white layer as my background layer, and I do lots of collages!
EDIT:
Ok, I just went back and have some info for you. First do you have both pictures open (WINDOW>IMAGE>TILE)? If you do then with the one picture open, go over to the other, then press and hold both the ctrl and Alt keys down. click on the picture and drag it into the new picture. That picture should end up on its own layer.
Let me know if this works for you.....

The little box in the top right corner of the screen with 4 squares in it will allow you to open multiple pictures on your work area at once when you click on it. Then just click the one to move and drag across to the new location.

Don't worry about it ... just take it slow and easy and let us know if you manage it this time :)

Thanks, I've got it! I did move the images before without having to have the tile format showing. I wonder how I did that.

I have had same problem and found first to make a copy of background first.
I,ve read to cascade Window>Cascade, I will try Tile next.
I still do not have a defined work flow for layers yet but I,m getting there.
My ??? is What steps are used with a MAC (imac G5).
Flipping thru forum is a worth the $$$ of subscription itself.

Hi John ...
Macs have a floating desktop so if you open more than one image just close down (or minimise) the Filebrowser (PSE3)/Brisge (PSE4) then you will be able to see both images onscreen.
Just use the cursor to move the images around on the screen ... then drag from one image to the other.
I don't use the Photobin at all as I find it easier to use drag and drop ... :)

Maybe you had the Cascade selected under the Windows/Images at the top of your screen. That will work, too. ebsnapper
