I am trying to place the copyright symbol on my photos. I tried to press and hold the alt key while typing "0169" and it does not seem to work. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks

Hi...

A couple of questions:

Do you have the Text tool selected?

Are you using the number keys on the right of your keyboard? It won't work if you try to use the numbers at the top of the keyboard.

Hi Mike,

Yes, I am using the text tool. I'm also using a laptop, so the only numbers are at the top of the keyboard.

Any other ideas?

Thank you for your help.

Hi,
Did you create a new layer first? And make certain the layer you're working on is on top.

Carole,

On your laptop keyboard you should have a second set of numbers that are the same as the number pad on a regular keyboard. On my Dell laptop they are in Blue and on the M, J, K, L, U, I, O, 7, 8, 9 keys. You probably need to pres the Function (Fn) key to access them.

If you hold down ALT and Fn and type 0169 using the alternative number keys it will work - I just tried it on my laptop.

A very useful tool in Windows is the Character Map (Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Character Map). It has all the "odd" characters for all fonts, the codes that go with them and also lets you copy and paste to other applications like Elements (or here: ©) so you don't have to remember the obscure codes or figure out how to type them.

Create a new layer and, with the text tool selected, copy and paste the character you want. If you're going to use it often, select it and then create a brush from the selection so then you always have it available as a brush.

I think it is attractive to emboss and bevel this copyright character (and your name if you are following it with your name), and then reduce the opacity of the layer so it is discreet on your photo and not blaring out of your image. (And remember to look at the different fonts, too, for slight variations in the way this character looks when you use it, some are quite beautiful)

There are other ways to do this, but I like this method. Consider building a copyright on transparent bkg, and saving it .png or .gif and then just pulling it onto any image finished and ready to go. (Or just open several images at once, and drag the layer with the copyright on it, right on over to the each of open images.)
Steps are
First, create your copyright as Tony and Mike suggested, then
>Styles and effects palette
>layer styles and bevel (proabably simple inner is best)
>Filter>stylize>emboss (you will get message that the type layer must be simplified...okay that)
>Emboss dialog box, adjust sliders (be sure preview is turned on) until you like what you see
>0K
>V (move tool) and position your copyright
>on layers PALETTE, reduce the opacity of your simplified text layer so that the embossed copyright comes discreetly out of the image.

(Tony, WHAT a great idea to create a brush out of your copyright. Thanks for that wonderful tip.)

Hope this helps

Hi Sherry,

A while back I wrote a mini tut on how to create a signature brush ... here is link to it. All you need to do is type the copyright symbol and then comtinue just as thought it was any other text:

Sherry,

Its in the Custom Shapes.

Look in the tool bar ... third from the bottom grouped with the rectangle tool you will find it. Just click on it then at the top of the screen you will see a box marked shape take a look in there.

If the copyright symbol isn't visible you can load more shapes by clicking on the little black triangle at the top right hand side of the box.

Sherry,

One of the great things about Elements is all the extras ... when you see a small black arrow it usually means there is something else there .. so go exploring.

Enjoy ... :)

Wendy,
I followed your instructions & now have a signature brush/set. :D
But I can't figure out how to get the copyright symbol in there. :? Sorry for being so lost, I tried to add it by adding a new layer but couldn't figure it out. I know it must be a simple thing.
Thanks,
Sherry
