Does anyone know how to CUT and PASTE (insert) a clip from one part of the timeline to another without disturbing the audio?

I am NOT using linked audio and video.

I know if you DRAG the clip and ALT-drop it onto the timeline it will insert it into the timeline and only shift the video on that timeline. That works fine if the clip is relatively close to the area where you want to insert it.

if the clip is far away (say, at the end of a 35 minute video and you want to move it to a spot early in the video), dragging it can be cumbersome. If you CUT it and use CLIP->INSERT, it will cut the audio and shift it to the right (and there's no easy way that i know of to get the audio back to where it was. Ripple Delete doesn't work).

Is there a technique that can be applied here?

The best way is to get the clip you want to move into the Media Panel, so you can just drag it while holding down the ALT key and drop it where you want it. To do that you will need to trim and name the clip, see the tutorial at http://www.chuckengels.com on trimming in the media panel. Otherwise, I think you understand how the program works, there is no easy way to move a clip from one place to another without having to adjust something after.

this is EXACTLY the type of technique i was hoping for -- thanks. i suspected it had something to do with getting the clip to the media panel.

It works great on your (well done) tutorial, but when i drag a clip from my monitor to the media panel i get a "No" sign and i can't drop it on the panel. why? i've tried it with still images, video clips, and video clips where i've set in/out points (as in your video).

Is the clip you are trimming in the monitor from the Timeline, or the Media Panel? I don't have the program running right now but I don't think you can trim a clip on the Timeline and put that in the Media Panel, you need to create sub clips from the Media Panel clips, not clips on the Timeline.

the clip i want to move is on the timeline, at the end of the timeline, and i want to move it to a spot early in the timeline, without screwing up the audio track.

The tutorial you linked to in your reply seems to do the trick nicely, but i can't get it to work when i try it. i'm sure i'm doing something wrong. maybe i don't understand how to create a subclip from a clip in the timeline.

i'm really looking forward to your answer. I'll be away for three weeks (in Africa!) so pls don't think that my lack of response is a lack of interest. I will check for your reply the minute i get back.

many thanks.

Even though the clip is on the timeline it is also in the Media Panel. Find the clip in the Media Panel and do the trimming from that clip, not the Timeline. You can't create a sub clip from a clip on the Timeline only a clip in the Media Panel.

You could also copy and paste the entire clip to the end of the timeline and work from there, editing out what you don't need.

As far as not screwing up the Audio Track, you need to work with holding down the Alt key while moving and dropping clips on the Timeline, it will help you a ton. If you get a chance pick up the Premiere Elements 2 In A Snap book, you will learn lots of helpful tips and tricks ;)
