selections and layers

hi,
a question about selections.
if i have my image, and i create a duplicate (new layer), and on my new layer i make a selection

then i hide my new layer
when i look at the bottom layer, i see the selection (marching ants)

why is the selection active on the bottom layer?

Hi Eleanor ...

The selection will show up no matter which layers are visible on the screen ... think of the selection as floating on screen above them all.

However, when you want to use that selection then you do need to make sure which layer is the active layer ... up to then it doesn't matter. :)

Wow, are you always online? I hope so, because you are truly an enlightened one...anyway, still a little confused...when i go to my bottom layer and i see the selection, when i apply a filter or something, it just is applied to that selection, just as if i selected it on that layer...so i guess it really is a selection that i can use on the lower layer, right?

Hi Eleanor ...

You can use a selection on any of the layers ... just make sure that the one you want to use it on is the current active layer (go to the layers palette and check which layer is highlighted thats the current active one)
