I have a couple of Scott Kelby's DVDs, which I'm sure would be excellent if I could watch them. The images on both these DVDs are not at all clear and quite jumpy. My DVD player would appear to be quite okay......no problem with any other DVDs. I'm just making a stab in the dark with this.....perhaps somebody more knowledgeable than I am can tell me........but could it be anything to do with our Aust. TV system. We have PAL here.......not so in the U.S. I don't think?? Any suggestions or thoughts on this?

I play mine on my computer's DVD player with no problem, however, I did have problems on the regular DVD player for the TV. I know some DVD's I have are only able to play on the computer DVD player.

Yes Nancy.....I tried it on the DVD player on the PC, but that was much, much worse. Tried the DVD program that came with the computer and also tried Windows media player. I know you can buy plug-in decoders (I think that's what they are called....very ignorant about all this:o ) for Windows media player, but I don't know whether that would make any difference. Appreciate any advice on this one.

Robyn:

Can you call a customer service number? Maybe they were part of a bad batch????????

Hi Colleen I don't think I'll call customer service from Australia :D , but I could send them an email. But I very much doubt if it is a problem with the DVDs, more likely a problem with the DVD player component in my PC I would think. The first one I got 'free' when I joined up last October and I've just acquired another one so they certainly would not be in the same 'batch'. Thanks anyway.

Hi Robyn ...

I don't have any DVDs by Scott but I do have one by Matt and one by Dave. On the back of both it says NTSC All regions.

I spoke to my husband and he says that most other regions apart from the states are indeed PAL but that a lot of DVD players now play Videos in both formats ... so take a look at your instruction book for the DVD player.

He also said that regardless of that your computer should play them OK anyway ...

Ummm seems strange ... :(

Could someone please explain this to me??

I disabled the firewall in Norton Internet Security and the DVD's now play quite okay.

Seriously, one reason for pictures to jump up and down is interlacing, and usually, any video player will de-interlace the video. Check to see if this setting is available in your player and make sure it's turned on.

Thank you Ray.

I had a look in the video configuration and under De-interlacing mode were 3 options. 1. auto select 2. force bob 3. force weave
None of this means anything to me, but auto select was the one that was chosen.

Hmm.. I am not accustomed to those terms.. In Final Cut Express HD, when I have to create a video for the computer, I use De-Interlace and I choose Lower field. It always work.

Sorry, I can't help :(

Robyn:

Now that you mention that, I have had other people to tell me to disable my Norton firewall before I do some things. I think the problem for me was remembering to put it back up!:o

Robyn,
It could just be that Norton Internet Security is looking at the DVD as a virus.
Many sites I've downloaded from mention that Norton should be turned off during the download session. Just my best guess.....

Who knows, maybe Norton was trying to scan the disk for viruses while you were trying to watch it???

The NTSC vs. PAL can be a problem on some equipment, esp. DVD players (not computer based). The codes are used by video producers to control the sale and distribution of DVDs by region (prevent trans-shipment). I remember seeing there are cheat codes that can be put in via your remote control to make your DVD player accept other formats. Those are explained on this web site:
http://www.multilingualbooks.com/dvdformatfaq.html
Look under the headings regarding region-free DVD players and also under hacks.

Starting point would be the equipment's instruction book, though, to see what formats it will play.
