Hi Chris ...
... and welcome to the forum :)
Do you mean the magnetic lasso ?? ...
if so then it work best when you have an object that has clear edges to it. Click down where you want to start and you will see that the magnetic lasso tries to find the edges ... it it misses part then click down again on that section.
When you have gone all the way round just do Edit>Copy then Edit>Paste and it will copy the object onto its own layer. You will then be able to delete the background layer save the cut out object as a psd file (with a new name) ...
Its not a tool that I like very much ... some images it works really well with and others its hopeless :)

Hi Chris ...
Oh that is an easy one to do :)
Go to the layers palette and double click on the background layer ... a box will pop up asking you to rename it .. just click on OK (You only need to do this if your layer is called background)
Now for the clever bit :)
Select the Magic Wand ...
Click on the white area
then do Edit>Delete
... and you should now have your logo on a transparent background (if there are a few bits left just use the eraser to get rid on them)
Then you will need to save it as a Gif ... Just use Save As then make sure that it says gif in the box near the bottom.
