View Full Version : Instructed in Mac or PC?

All -- Yesterday I started the Digital Photography Workflow online training. I run PE3 on a Mac running the latest version of OSX.

On the day-1 module I bumped up against what appears to be instructions given for PC users that don't work the same on the Mac.

Please tell me this training is not only instructed for PC users.
If it is, are there work-arounds for us Mac folks?

Thanks

Greg

Hi Greg ...

What didn't work ... usually its only the shortcuts that are different.

Wendy -- it was two shortcuts, yes. Plus the arrows to hide the palette and photo bins.

So, is this online course instructed for PC users only? That would be a drag.

Greg ...

No the course is for both but I don't think on this online class the Mac shortcuts are given ... I'm sure that they are on some of the others classes. Doesn't really matter as they are quite simple ...

PC key Control is Command on the Mac
PC key Alt is Option on the Mac

So just change those and the shortcuts will work .... :)

The arrow keys are windows only as Macs don't have a back to the workspace but ...

Tab hides the palettes, photo bin and the top bars :) then Tab again to bring them back

Photo bin click on the red spot to close ... Window>Photo Bin to bring it back. Mine is closed all the time ... I don't like the way it fills the screen and with a Mac you can see what is open behind any other images. :)

If you get stuck with anything else just let me know and I'll take a look at it for you ...

Excellent, thanks Wendy.

I did figure out the keyboard shortcuts on my own, but not the bin-hiding buttons.

Now that I know you can translate PC to Mac I won't hesitate to contact you if I get stuck with any other instructions as I make my way thru this program.

Best,

Greg

Greg,

Most of the time the instructions are given in both PC speak & Mac speak: it's a while since I did the Workflow course so could be that no translation was given:)

BTW - don't bother signing up for the 'Organising & Shring Your Photos' course - that is most definitely PC only as it deals exclusively with the Organiser.

Thanks for the tip Bayla.

Seems like in 2006 we should all not still have to bump up against this PC/Mac platform stuff. Seems very old school to me.
Why not create the online training instructed for either Mac or PC and have a button click to let the user select which they want?? The answer to such questions is usually development costs. I imagine it is here too.

Hi Greg ...

The Digital Workflow class was the first one they did and the shortcuts are Windows but by the second set of online classes (Portrait Retouching) both Window and Mac Shortcuts are included. :)

All the subscriber Videos have both sets of shortcuts too :)

I barely notice the shortcut abbreviations anymore.. it's almost like cmnd/cntrl or alt/option is one word.

Hi Gary ...

Its quite confusing for me ... I have three keys to the left of the keyboard and they are marked (left to right) Ctrl, Alt and the last one just has a llittle Apple one it.

So I have to try to remember that:

My little Apple key is Command for Mac users and Control for Windows users
My Alt key is Option for Mac users and Alt for Windows users
... and the key marked Control is Right click for Windows users (I think)

Are you confused yet ??? .... well I am :D

So next time I get one of keys wrong you know why :)

(I think that mine is the UK Mac keyboard) ..

Do you guys have that one with the little curly thing on it (I think it was/is option)?

Hi Gary ..

My alt key has a sort of curly thing :) ... well it looks a bit like a side view of a saucepan with one side missing

Now if they would just make a universal keyboard -- it would make things much simpler. Having Alt / Option doing the same thing, or will that not work?

Well - if I ever get a Mac I will be one step up because every time I try to remember something that Matt or Dave said in a tut I automacially say "I need to press Alt/Option or Command/Control" in my mind. You're right Gary - they are becoming a single word.;)

Hi Will ...

A universal keyboard would be nice ... not sure that Windows folks would like having an Apple key :)

Alt/Option do the same thing ... and once you get used to translating the keys it really is easy. Funny thing is because I started writing tutorials in the early days of the site when lots of people were new and they were Windows users I tend to write the Windows shortcuts ... and sometimes I do forget and miss out the Mac ones

It used to be exactly that way, Wendy, keyboards with both keys. If my memory is good, I think it was Logitech which used to make universal keyboards. The switch to Windows keyboard was recent (a few years, I think).
