lesson 19 new layer instead of dupe why?

today was the first day (i think) that matt said create a new layer. Now all other lessons have be to dupe the layer. So why today create a new layer, i don't understand. When or why to create new verses dupe .

never mind, when i typed this out and read it. I think I do know why he create a new layer today. Changing the color of a shirt. But still why not change on the dupe layer... it is late and my brain must be in a fog.

Hi Cathy ...

In this case he didn't want to use a copy of the layer as he just wanted a blank layer above the image. That allowed him to use a different blend mode for the layer and achieve the replacements colour ... it also allowed him to later lower the opacity of the layer to adjust the look of the image. He couldn't have done things like this on a duplicate ...

Using a new blank layer gave him so much more flexibility ... layers are brilliant for flexibility :)
