best way to start is by observation. Get a piece of paper and a good soft 6B pencil and place a simple 3D object in front of you. Do a light basic outline first < like a coloring book page that has not yet been colored....and this does not have to be perfect either. Afterwards concentrate on the shadows of the object and shade in bit by bit,,,some areas will be darker than others so apply more pressure to these areas. The highlights will fall into place on their own. Having real time viewable reference of an object that isn't moving gives you alot of room to experiment. Remember, 'you' are controling the pencil. Start with something that has simple edges like a desk stapler or something like that.

I have Brenda Hoddinott "drawing for dummies"
She also has a web site with tutorials

http://www.finearteducation.com/
You can also check out her other site www.hoddinott.com

Another great drawing book is Drawing on the right side of the brain by Betty Edwards.

The hard part is to keep up working with the books!! Both are excellent.
