View Full Version : Combining projects

My son and daughter have done some videoing of our cats for a school project. They've made a super job and are very proud of themselves, but are now trying to transfer to DVD. We haven't had a DVD burner very long, having had it fitted specially on the acquisition of a new camcorder!

When they captured their material, as it was a first attempt, they thought it would be simpler to keep each project short, so they captured each "chapter" for want of a better word, as a separate project, thinking they would be able combine it and burn it on to a DVD at the end. However, they don't seem to be able to do this. PE will only let you burn the project that is open at the time, if you try and add more, wants to overwrite the first (we're using re-writable DVDs at the moment, to avoid ruining recordable only DVDs). If we try and burn with Nero, which came with the burner, we drag the first project in, then when we try and add the second, the files inside the project have the same names, so it won't let us either.

So, they tried opening the first project and adding the others on the end, thinking they could combine the lot in PE, then burn it as one project. Nope. "Add media" just ignores us when we try and add the other projects. We tried adding photos, etc, just to test add media was actually working - that worked fine, but not to add one project to another.

Are we trying to do something that's impossible. Should they have put them all as one project in the first place? The reason they did it this way, is the "Premiere Elements Made Easy" book told us not to attempt to burn more than half an hours video onto a DVD. If you can't combine projects and can't burn more than half an hour, then it means you're chucking away one and a half hours on every DVD you burn. We're baffled.

They're now resorting to trying to export the whole lot back on to dv tape and recapture it as one project, but as you can see from my other posting on this forum, that's not going smoothly either!!! Eternal gratitude for anyone who can help please?

Just some quick questions, and I will try to think this through tomorrow.

These projects that you want to combine...are they derived from putting your material on Timeline and then burning to folder? If so, have you been dealing with the VIDEO_TS folder? Or, did you put material on Timeline and then export? And, if so, as what file type?

Have you looked at file types available for import versus the file type of what you have and want to combine?

If "same name" is problem, did you attempt to change any of the file names?

What explanation did Premiere Elements Made Easy give you for saying not to attempt to burn more than half and hour video onto DVD...quality/compression issue and/or time required for burning and/or other?

Thanks very much for your reply. We are stuck at the moment and don't know where, or to whom to go next. We have tried so many ways round this, we are getting a bit confused and mixed up with what we've tried.

Yes, we did put the projects on the timeline, as separate projects, and then burned each of them to a folder. Yes, we were dealing with the VIDEO_TS folder. This was trying to burn the folders using Nero on to a DVD. This was when we were informed that the files had the same names in each project.

We also tried burning straight on to a DVD through Premiere Elements by exporting to DVD, but when we'd successfully burned the first, we couldn't add the other as it wanted to overwrite the first or cancel the burn. At this point PE was burning as MPEG files.

When we have tried to combine material either on a DVD or on the timeline by importing media to make one large project, we have only tried to combine the same file type.

Yes, we did attempt to change the names of the files, when burning with Nero, but it still wouldn't have it.

Would having separate DVD authoring software (such as DVD workshop/encore help) make life easier?

Easy - Adobe Premiere Elements (sorry not "Made Easy") is a very simplified book that I bought to help my 12 year old son achieve straightforward projects (!!!!!!) It doesn't devote more than a page, with lots of pictures, to burning to DVD. It simply says at the bottom that burning a dvd is trickier than it looks (you're telling me!) and "don't try to burn a movie more than half an hour or so in length." No further explanation. No mention of quality/compression/time. It is a very simple book dealing with simple scenarios, which I thought would help my son. I do have Steve's Grisetti's/Chuck Engels "PE 2 in a Snap" for myself, which I am ploughing my way through.

Thanks so much for helping. Have you any clues about why I can't export to dv tape - see my other posting.

Have sorted the exporting to dv tape problem. Still would appreciate help on the burning though. My son is now working round the problem by exporting all four projects on to dv tape in the camcorder, then re-capturing as a single project to burn on to a dvd.

Jani,

Once you have your video on the Timeline and you are satisfied with your additions (titles, transitions, etc.) if any........it may take some time, but I would Render in Edit by pressing Enter before heading over to the DVD panel.

Make sure that you preview the DVD before burning.

Make sure that the DVD disc that you use is one that your DVD player will accept. My DVD player accepts all. But when I used DVD - R in Premiere Elements 2.0, I had to hit Rescan twice before hitting the Burn button for it to work without an error at the very end of the burning process. The other disc types did not require this sort of pre-step.

If you run into problems in the burning process, you can still burn to folder since you now have the whole project and will not have to work around Nero and its accepting one Video_TS under the present circumstances.

I have sent you off a Private Message with other details and comments.
