Got my issue of Pop Photo today and there on page 86 is our very own Jodi Frye's winning composition.
http://www.popphoto.com/photocontests/2261/digital-wizard-2006-page2.html
The young lady on the couch is Jodi's composition. I won't spill the beans of the win (what she won). Jodi can do that if she likes.
Congrats Jodi...

Congrats Jodi! That's very cool. I love all the little detail, like the reflections of the woman, little rodent on the knee, statue, framed picture, etc. in the coffee table.
It also looks like the statue figure is taken from one of the photos on the table, yes?
Great work!

Hey Brice, I didn't get my promised issue yet ! For those who care I got lonely 3rd place...but that's Ok considering there were over 900 entries ( that is what Lori over at Pop Photog told me ) . I didn't even like this image as i thought it was very boring but the last few times I entered they didn't notice my 'out of the box' creations so i went the yawn route this time...i guess the yawn route suited them OK enough to place me. I was in fact surprised...I almost didn't even send it.
Thanks everyone for all your kind words of encouragement !
PS, I still did not get my prize.

Third place is 897 places higher than I would have placed.:p
You should be proud of it - it is remarkable work.

Jodi, your technique represented a photo realistic result. It's interesting some of the other winners were more abstract. I think it's a crap shoot with these and some fantastic images get overlooked. It's art and not all art appeals to everyone. Everything I've seen you do is fantastic and can be out of this world. Gallery worthy.
By the way: lonley 3rd place is wonderful. That's a winner in my book. There are over 900 people lower on the totem pole.

You rock! That's terrific work, and I can't even IMAGINE the time and talent it takes to create something like this. The detail is really something. I'm happy for you.

Wow, thanks for the overwhelming replies ! I appreciate your support, truly i do. You guys are really the best part of me.
Byron...totally opposite. I hate the '3' #. For me it would have been better to not place at all. I can't help it as I'm just that way. I've always been my worst enemy.

Jodi,
I have always struggled with "art". I ended up coming to peace with the fact that I can recognize it, but can't make it. I most definitely recognize it in what I've seen of your work, my friend!
So, of course, my remark was out of pure jealousy... you make my brown eyes green!!!

Jodi you are now published! :D Really it should give you great satisfaction to see your work in a magazine that is so widely distributed! When one of my (not very good) pictures of my dog got picked to go in a Golden Retrievers for Dummies book I was thrilled!! It wasn't something I created and slaved over but was still proud to see it in a book. You need to get a second copy to put away and keep good.
Be proud. You did a fantastic job.

Jodi, since you don't like being #3, I have a solution for you... the next time you submit an awesome entry like that, put my name on it instead. That way, you won't be disappointed if you don't place 1st, but I'd be thrilled.
Anything to help you out :D
You Rock Jodi!

After seeing your entry I'm considering giving up with Elements and taking up some other pursuit. Maybe cross stitch, knitting or Yoga.

Thanks Mary, and I feel so honored to be your friend...You are the special one to me...always have been. Especially someone who is surrounded by such people in high places...the rest of them here don't know but i do...your feelings towards me and my work mean so much to me. Thank You.

I've been away from home for a few days, so I just read of your accomplishments. I'm so happy for you, Jodi...:)
All I have to say is if, and I -- so i went the yawn route this time...i guess the yawn route suited them OK enough to place me. ---then I'd better give up trying to create photos.. It certainly would have been FIRST PLACE in my book.
Sincerely, Dorrie

June 8th, 2006, 06:23 PM
Thanks so much Dorrie....it was a weird project that i started over about 3-4 times. I usually do not let anyone or thing influence my work but as i said...i did when i went the yawn route. In the back of my head I tell myself that if I had of let it all hang out then perhaps I could have been first...or not place at at. These things are just a crap shoot and half the time i think the judges are on some bad trippin' weed. Anyways, I do it cause I want to. Winning something is certainly icing on the cake. So where did you go ? Somewhere nice ? Thanks again Dorrie.

Jodi,
To answer your question, My away from home was a visit with my sister and bother-in-law. They are both having health issues and I just need to visit them as much as possible. They live about 80 miles from me, so when I go to their house I usually stay for a few days.
By the way, you still amaze me with your wonderful images. I adore your work. :)

Thanks Kerri, I'm still waiting on my comp issue !!! I'm more curious as to what was written on the page...they completely took me off guard when they called here asking me about the image, myself etc... My son was in the background being a pain with his begging for a butter sandwich (loudly)...she's asking me all these questions and I felt the whole conversation to be kind of awkward and I felt my answers were kind of silly and not well put together. Anyways, I guess I'm afraid to look like a dumb-@$$ in there...please don't say the truth if I did. :) Thanks so much Kerri.
Dorrie, you are such a good person !!!! Next life you will come back as a guardian angel.

Jodi, I just don't get it!!!! You should have been Grand Prize Winner. The others don't even compare. You incorporated more of the contest images than anyone else & that alone should have given you the edge. Factor in your AWESOME art & it's not even a contest!!! Apparently the judges were sleepwalking!

I've received my copy of PopPhoto and, in my opinion, the judges should go soak their heads.
Their top two picks... I could only think "REALLY? You liked THAT?" They weren't terrible, or anything bad -- but I don't see how they got top billing.
Jodi was robbed.

I'm just frustrated trying to find one. I've looked in 4 stores that carry "Popular" everything but Photo. My hubby also checked 3 airports for me while travelling yesterday (Orlando, Ft. Meyers and St. Louis). No luck.

Hi Jodi,
I just found this thread. Wonderful work. Be proud. I am always checking your gallery to see what else I can marvel at. I feel a bit of a bond because it was mainly because of your help I got my Fuji and I am so enjoying it. I recently did a photo of a neighbour's daughter and I used a technique from a thread of yours that I had saved. They loved it. I think between the camera and your technique it turned out pretty nice. I think it would be pretty special to have a photo in a photography magazine - in my dreams!!!

Hi Shari, sorry i must have missed your post.....just found it now that Tom has posted. Thanks so much ! So how do you like the Fuji ? Is it treating you OK ? :)
Tom, Thanks !! Ya I was suppose to get a comp issue of the magazine but still haven't received it...well, i haven't received any$$thing from them yet. I was at the market this morning and found the July issue and bought it. I was a little disappointed that my image was posted so small considering how 'huge' the high res original was that I sent them. Anyways, Grand prize is really neat and first prize was cool and 2nd prize was...well, no comment at the moment ;) ... Thanks for the post Tom !
