View Full Version : splitting 1 .avi into multiple .avi's

I am attempting to transfer some old (VHS) home movies to DVD, and hope to perform some editting on them as well. I uploaded a VHS tape which is 2 hours and 20 minutes long (it as a conglomeration of home movies c. 1960). There were no date codes on the tape, so it appeared to be all 1 scene. Consequently it is 1 (very large) .avi file.
I want to split that .avi file into many (30?) separate .avi files. I understand that if I use the splitclip tool or the razor tool, it doesn't really split the clip, it just makes another copy with different in/out points. I don't want 30  copies of my very large .avi file.
Any ideas on how to genuinely split an .avi file?
Thanks! :)

 Hum. It occurs to me that I may not be asking the right question.
It seems that when I use the splitclip tool, it doesn't actually make another copy of the .avi (thank goodness!). It seems instead to make another reference to the original .avi file, but with a new set of in/out points. So far, so good.
Unfortunately, I still show only 1 .avi file in the media panel, albeit with multiple "usages".
I would like to have an entry in my media panel for each psuedo-clip. I could then organize the ~30 psuedo-clips in some meaningful way, allowing me to put them in the timeline where I want them.
Thanks for your help!

You don't need to have an entry for each pseudo-clip in the media panel to do what you want, if what you want is to devide your avi file into several clips and rearrenge them just keep splitting the way you are doing it and then in the timeline click and drag the clips to another position if the clip you moved left a gap just right click on the gap and choose close gap from the sub menu

javier,
Thanks for your response! I understand that I do not need to have an entry in the media panel for each psuedo-clip, but I want to have one! :)
The 2 hours 20 minutes of video cover 14 years, and they are not all in sequence :( . Organizing ~30 clips in a strictly linear fashion sounds really hard. I would prefer to organize them in the media panel, using folders.
My current approach to is to keep a "master" clip in the media panel, and then duplicate it for each psuedo-clip. I then give each psuedo-clip its own in/out point, and drag the psudeo-clips to the timeline. It is awkward at best, and when I view the psuedo-clips in the monitor panel in "clip" mode, each one appears to be the full 2 hours long.
I have manually added clip markers to the in/out points of each clip so that at least I can easily navigate to the in/out points in the monitor panel in "clip" mode. But I'm not sure what will happen to those clip markers as I modify (remove frames from within) the psuedo-clip. I don't know if they will shift as the in/out points shift, or if they will stay fixed to the offset where the in/out points originally were. Time will tell, I guess.
So far I've only done this for the 1st 3 psuedo-clips. I don't know if I should continue down this road, or maybe somebody has a better idea?
Thanks again for your help,
Clo

nh_kjk,
See if this helps, all of this is done in the monitor panel ok, move the CTI to where you want the clip to begin then click on the Set In Point button then move the CTI to where you want the clip to end and click on the Set Out Point button this will make a clip now click on the movie don't let go the mouse button and drag to the media panel and don't worry you'll be dragging only the clip hope this helps
