Hello - New subscriber here with a question! (again) ;)

I'm using PSE-3 for digital scrapbooking, and am starting to design some of my own papers, etc., and I would like to find a book that would be helpful for creating 'stuff' from scratch - digital art, I guess it would be... I've got a fairly good handle on the basics (the real basics - like layers, histogram/light adjustments, color adjustments, etc.) but am looking to learn more of the cooler effects to make digital scrapping kits... Can anyone recommend a favorite book? One that doesn't focus solely on retouching photos etc.?

Any input appreciated!
Thank yoU!

Hi Jill,

There a number of books out there, but a couple that come to mind are;

1. Scrapbooking with Adobe Photoshop Elements 3 by Carla Rose

2. Scrapbooking with Photoshop Elements: The Creative Cropping Cookbook by Lynette Kent.

These two titles are very basic, but they get you started. I recommended these two books, among others, to local Cropping Clubs. The feedback that I have received have been very favorable.

Hope this helps.:)

Hi Jill ...

I don't do scrapbooking so I can't help with advice on about books but I did write some tutorials on making scrapbooking things ... here is a link to them. They should start you off:

Hi Ric - Wow - Thank you for the quick reply!

Actually - I do have both of those books! :D And you're right - they're on a fairly 'basic'/easy level. I'm looking for something that goes a bit beyond those book. But thank you for the reminder - I think I'll pull them out and have another look - I used them more a few months ago, when I was first learning - maybe they've got some stuff I over-looked. (that wouldn't surprise me!) :D

Thanks again!
Jill

And Wendy - Thank you! I'm off the check them out right now!

Thank you all for your suggestions! All are appreciated! :) Well, guess what??? I got Matt K's DVD-Rom in today's mail!! (I just subscribed a few days ago, and there was a special promo - if you sub'd for 2 years, you got the DVD free! And it is GREAT!) SO I'm pretty happy about that - That was WA-A-A-y faster than I expected to receive that!

I will do a search for Bert Monroy as someone suggested - and yes, I've been to Linda's Website, and have one of her CD-Roms (Scrapper's GUide to PSE-3 - excellent!). SO, I think mostly what I need to do, is just continue to work with the program, continue working through any and all tuts I can find (and I'm finding there are a LOT of GREAT ones right here - just awesome!) I'm realizing that I probably already know more than I think I know, and I just need to make the time to sit and play and play and play till I come up with stuff I like! (Well, that, along with checking out EVERY SINGLE library book from my town and the next one - 2 large libraries! and I've got - I think - EVERY one of their PS or PSE books home right now! :D

Thank you for your great suggestions! Y'all are very helpful!
Jill - a grateful newby! :D

Hi Jill ...

Wow that was quick ... I am sure that you will love Matt's DVD. :)

Bert Monroy does photorealistic work ... you will find it interesting but there is no scrapbooking on his site. Here is a link:

Jill I think that you will find that if you really get comfortable with working with elements you will be able to make a go on your own. I find that I can look at 'regular' scrap booking magazines and then figure out how to do it digitally. The main thing is to know what you can do in elements in the first place and how to do it.

I am a member of scrappersguide.com and every month we get a wonderful tutorial and that is also very helpful.

It's all made in illustrator and photoshop Colleen. Pretty amazing work isn't it. That one took him longer than he planned on. There was a little interview with him on photoshop tv this week and it is continuing last week. I have a couple of his books and his work is fantastic.

I'm returning one of his books tomorrow. Very inspiring. You'll need the full version of PSCS2 and Illustrator C2 (I'm sure CS or even V7 would do).

If you read the details of some of his images you'll find they are 1000's of layers and individual pieces in each.

Hi ...

In some ways his books are simply pointers on how to do the effects as it isn't possible to cover more than a tiny part of the process but his work is just amazing. After doing one fairly detailed one I really do appreaciate the time it takes to complete an image ... mine took months and ended up with over 500 layers.

I'm not that good with illustrator so I do all of mine in Photoshop ...

I would love to go to one of his classes ... :)
