A good friend of mine informed me of the availability of free Curves for Elements 4, but for Windows only at this time.

Ooh, ooh, looks exciting, BUT has anyone tried it and have they been able to load it and get it to work properly and does it knacker anything else and....... yes I am too much of a coward to give it a go for myself....... YET.

<EDIT>

OMG, I managed to load it and get it going in under five minutes... MUST be some sort of record for me........ NOW, all I have to do is work out what to do with it and hopefully understand why everyone gets so excited about curves v levels. Just jabbing at it with a relatively blunt instrument i.e. what I do with things seems to produce some verrry interesting results.....

That's okay, I wasn't rapping your knuckles with the ruler. Just letting you know. It's so easy to miss stuff these days. There is so much going on here!!

What will they cripple in v4 to make v5? It makes v3 unbeatable, but any nags will be there for ever. No improvement releases for v3.

Honnestly, I have not had the time to read everything that's posted around this forum lately. When I got the link I immediately thought of all those who were missing the curves.

Thanks Ray,
I missed it elsewhere on the forum too.
Now I guess I have to figure out to use these too---too much to learn (sigh):o

I missed it wherever it first appeared and have downloaded it and 'tried' to use it. SO Carbone, there has been at least 1 good reason for your posting the link.

I am pretty thorough when checking the forum for subjects when I haven't visited for a bit and I had not seen ANY other mention of this link before Carbone thankfully gave a mention of it specifically in a thread title AND posted a link, maybe it was posted elswhere in a thread about curves generally, BUT as I had no access to curves before I was probably none too concerned about wading through a 4 or 5 page thread that I would be in no way able to take solace in, i.e it ain't much fun having CS2 users telling me I am in the stone age using levels or having some moanng about NOT having curves. Whereas a thread title mentioning in it access to curves for PSE 4 users (windows) got me by the proverbials immediately and despite trepidation in the idea of loading extras, I was determined to give it a go. And I am glad I did.

I am also immensely grateful to Carbone for this faux pas of forum etiquette and incurring the wrath of so many by daring to repost this link in a specific thread.

So instead of trying to stomp on poor Carbone, can we please accept that he has performed a service and SOME of us are glad he committed such heinous crime.

I wouldn't have gotten the impression that anyone was trying to stomp poor Ray from this thread. Are you alright Ray? :)

I also missed to previous thread on this topic and I'm thankful to have the link. Got it bookmarked an look forward to installing and giving curves a try. Does anyone know if this tool is a set of "presets" or does this tool function similar to curves add ons in version 3?

Hi Norm ...

Hamlet doesn't really mean that ... its just his wicked sense of humour. :D :D

I sure hope you don't mean that Hamlet. I like Ray. I was just letting him know that his friend's link had been posted. I had read it just the day before. I know it's easy to get lost in the shuffle since this forum has gotten so big now. It was also a bit of tease to Ray who I know like myself, is having trouble keeping up!

Heck I was the one who orginally posted it and I'm not offended.

An I had no offense - I actually wasn't even following this thread

At that time there were just a two replies - so I think it was one of those posts that dropped off the radar rather quickly.

And I was just tieing my stomping shoes...

I also missed the original thread. I personally have no qualms about duplicates of the goodies. It's the repeated asking of questions just to get attention that is the bane of good forum behavior.

I wasn't offended the least! I know all of you (some more, some less) and I know you meant well, Pauline.

I downloaded the file. Now what do I do? I tried to figure it out myself but I failed. Thanks in advance for your help - Russ

Russ,
I'll second that question!!! Enquiring minds want to know......

I'm sorry, my question wasn't very clear. I'll give it another try. I have Windows XP Pro and PSE4. Here's what I tried: I downloaded the curves file, saved it to my desktop. I inserted the file into Adobe's Download Manager. Opened PSE4, checked for curves but didn't find it. What did I do wrong? Everything? Anything?

Hi Russ ...

Were there any instructions included with it ??

Ray,

Pourquoi perdez-vous notre temps en posant les mêmes questions deux fois ?

Ok.. installation instructions :

imply extract the files and put them into the plugin directory of Photoshop (something like C:\program files\adobe\Photoshop Elements\plug-ins). After the next restart a new entry easy.Filter/SmartCurve should appear in the Filter menu.

In other words, you double click on the ZIP file, and then you copy the folder (containing 3 files) into the Plug-ins folder.

That worked for me. Actually what appears is a filter called easy.filter at the bottom of the filter list and when you wave your mouse over it a dialogue box called Smartcurve appears. Click the box and it opens.

I've played around with it for a bit and it's pretty impressive. Lots of things I need to learn but it does do curves and the beauty of it is that, unlike the Grant curve with PSE3, you can save the curve and bring it back later and tweak it some more - not as simple as clicking an opening a curve adjustment layer as in Photoshop but pretty close.

You got me Ray. I actually use AltaVista Babel Fish. It's rarely right. Colloquialisms (spelling), which most Americans speak, are rarely translated properly. Now I spoke Wendy English it might work brilliantly.

Although i only have photoshop LE at the mo I decided to see if it would work in that in spite of the fact Photoshop LE has curves.

I followed Carbone's instructions and it seems to work fine or though I have not yet got a clue what I am doing. :D It is more sofisticated than the curves in LE which has no Histogram option.

The response of adjustments is slow compared to the LE version. The LE picture changes imediately as you adjust while this new one you have to wait a second or two before you see the change to the image. (But then it might be my old computer is slow and perhaps others with a modern machine may not be aware of such...

When my new kit arrives and I have elements 4 installed I will certainly be trying it in Elements 4 also...

So glad this thread appeared as I too never noticed a previous thread.....

Hi Malcolm ...

When your new kit arrives it looks like you are going to be busy ... :)

Much too hot for me today so I am going to spend the afternoon with Elements ...

That's certainly true Wendy. I think I will have to embark on quite a few learning curves/ connect it to the internet/Load my favourite software/Learn what the media centre is all about/ and generally have a nervouse break down before I even get to playing with Elements. :D

Media Centre or Center, depending on which side of the pond you are on, = Microsoft Profit.

Thanks to Ray and everyone. The other day, even though I had read the instructions, I wasn't able to figure out how to load the file. I guess I was having an off day--the older I get the more those [off] days attack me. Today, when I tried again, it seemed really obvious. Thanks again - Russ

I have just downloaded the smartcurve feature with no problem, however when I attempted to save a photo, the photo was saved with an acv. extension. After several attempts I am still unable to open the photo. Any suggestions?
