How do you guys save tutorials so you can view them later? I downloaded one, watched it but now it is gone. Is there a way to save to a CD or something? Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am not the world's brainiest when it comes to thinking like a computer.

Pat,
Yes, you can save the video tutorials. The file will be stored on your PC as a temporary internet file, what you need to do is find this file and then copy it to a new location. Here is how do to it:
 Download the video and let it play al the way through to the end.
 Go to Start > Search > All Files & Folders
 Click on the down arrow next to "More Advanced Options".
 Go to "Type Of File" and click the down arrow to reveal a long list of file types. From this list select "Quick Time Movie".
 Make sure the first three "Search" boxes beneath the "Type Of File" window are checked.
 Hit Search
 Windows will then find all of the Quick Time Movies on your PC.
 You could limit the number of files it will bring up by restricting the search date, I don't do this as sometimes it doesn't find the file.
 The tutorial video file will usually appear towards the bottom of the seach results. It will have the Internet Explorer "e" icon next to it - not a Quick Time logo. The file name will be something close to the title of the video.
 Right click on the file name and select Copy.
 Open the folder where you want to store the file and select Paste.
 The file will be pasted into the folder as a Quick Time file.

Thanks Mike, I'll give it a try the next time I want to download. It takes so darn long (don't have DSL) to download 4MB (about 30 minutes) and then the video plays out in about 2. Go figure.

Mike,
I tried and tried to find the video on my computer. No luck. My husband even went through every file on the damn thing. No video. I am somewhat disappointed if every time I want to view a video tutorial I must go online and download it again and again. Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I would think there would be a way to put it onto a CD or into a file that was accesible to me without going online. There are no instructions at all on the video section that tell one how to dowload. Are the videos something you are just supposed to watch and hopefully memorize all the moves?

Pat,
Because you download these videos they will be stored as a temporary file on your PC. It will be stored there until you clear the temp files...
Did you follow the process from start to finish on one go? Also, did you
make sure the three boxes where checked?
Which video did you try it on?

I followed your directions and then had my husband do the same thing as he is a computer person. We just can't find the files. The video I tried it on today was the making tags one. It must be somewhere on my computer because when I try to access it again while I am online it downloads instantly. The Quick Time movie thing only has a couple of sample quick time movies and one short video I made myself from the camera about a year ago. I am only frustrated because my memory won't hold all the information on the video and I would like to review the steps without having to go online every time.

Mike,
Do you know what extension we might be looking for? Is it a .mov? Maybe I need to look for something else. Don't know what it is called. Should I look for making tags? Linda's tutorials or what? Also have one of Matt's downloaded (the one on patterns) and can't find it either but all 3 come up right away when I am online so I KNOW they are somewhere.

Pat,
OK.. I found them per the instructions I gave you. There are two files associated with each movie - as I said they are temporary internet files and have the internet explorer "e" icon next to them - not the Quick Time logo.
The file you want will always resemble the video name in some way e.g. the Creating Layers Part 1 video has a temporary internet file name of "creating-tags1".
Here is a screen shot showing my search criteria and search results, I have highlighted the files you need to look for:

Mike,
I have absolutley no idea where these files are stored on my computer. Have used several search criteria including create, tags, etc as well as your initial instructions. Went through all temporary files - no luck. Guess that is why I prefer written instructions and books. I guess I'll just go into the scrapbook section, replay the video and write in shorthand what I need then type it up. Wish the staff would make this a little easier.

I wonder if the fact that I use Firefox as a browser is a problem I should be looking for. The videos are definitely in my computer somewhere. Will give it a try.

Could it be that you have your internet settings set to delete your temporary internet files upon disconnect. Some browser like internet explorer allow you to set it that way.

I don't think so but I'll check it out.

Hi Patricia,
Sorry for the issues you're having. One quick note. There really isn't anyway we can do to make this easier. You'd need to purchase Quicktime Pro to get the ability to officially do this. That is one of the main differences between the free version and the Pro version. Any other way of saving videos is really well, "cheating", in a sense. It can be done if you can find where your browswer is saving its temporary folders. I don't have Firefox but I'll see if I can find out. Also, I'm working on a Video FAQ area that will point issues like this out. Thanks for the input.

Hi Patricia - just a thought of how you can do it until the Firefox issue gets figured out ......
Use Internet Explorer just to view the video and then it will be in your temp file. I have had great success in saving them in the method that was described earlier.

Thanks for the tip, Mary. Maybe I'll do that if I need to save any more videos. Thanks too Matt. I hardly ever download videos so I guess I'll have to decide if I want to do that pro update thing.

That's were I am confused.
I played the video went to search etc.....but it did not come up under "Quicktime" movies. I think I may be missing a step or something.

Anna,
OK.... when you search for the video it won't come up as a Quick Time file in the search results. It will appear as a temporary internet file, but if you right click on the temporary internet file, select copy and then paste it to a different folder it will appear as a Quick Time file. This is how your search results should look - I have highlighted how the video will show up:
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?pic=1TaARiD7SlFQGjgY8PMnyx48Alnf0#
You will always get two files for each video. You want the one that most resembles the name of the video - in this example "creating-tags-1".
Let me know how you get on...

Oh boy Mike.........I missed the first part of your instructions and that is "download" the video...How do I download it? When I click on it the only way to save it is to "save taget as" and then when I go to open it is a HTML document. I think there in lies my problem I am not properly downloading it.

Download
Just left click and let it load and play just as if you were not trying to save it. After you have watched it, then do the search to find where it is in the temporary internet files and copy it from there.
Also, I think you need to have "include hidden and system files" checked in your search.

Anna,
Sorry... to "download" the video just click on "View Video" as if you are going to watch it, the video will open in a new window and load automatically. When it loads it is actually been saved as a temporary internet file onto your PC.

Whew........I finally figured it out. However I had to go thru Internet Explorer and not my search area. How I did it was like this.
1. Open up Internet Explorer.
2. Go to Tools and click on Internet Options.
3. Go to "Settings" in the Temporary Internet Files.
4. Click on View files.
5. Click on Local Settings
6.Click on History.
7.Another folder should come up saying "Today" click on that.
8. In there should be a folder that says "Photoshopelementsuser" click on that and that is where the file is downloaded.
I clicked on that and then went to "Edit" and clicked on "Copy to Folder" and opened up the folder that I wanted to put it in.
Once it was in the folder I renamed the file and then deleted the download.
And that's it.

I tried the method you described, but all it saves is a shortcut to the video, not the video itself...

I am using mac os 9.2.2 and ie 5.1 and with that can nicely save the movies in web archive files.
Unfortunately they do not translate to the windows xp laptop on which I want to view them. I have been able to save movies on the laptop by the method described in this thread but cannot find an equivalent method for the mac. The mac is on the broadband connection so I would prefer to download on my mac.
Can anybody help?
(Yes, I will hook the laptop to broadband as soon as i can find that pesky disc that is not where I was sure it was.)

These instructions work PERFECTLY for Firefox users as well as IE's. The search engine locates the QuickTime files, no matter where they are stored, (and no matter when you viewed them)
I have some QT movies on training CD's that I've bought, and even THEY show up as having been viewed. The search return doesn't tell you it was on a CD...leaves the location of the file blank, but every one viewed is picked up and displayed using these settings for the search.
Those movies from our online class that you view before you download--appear twice, (or however many times you have viewed it.) If I viewed using Internet Explorer, the blue e is in front of the file, If firefox (then quicktime logo). ... I have quicktime set as default movie viewer and that's probably why.
When copied from the search results window, and pasted into the folder you prefer, the movie runs correctly and is saved correctly..the whole file. (Tip: use the right click method one by one on the movie's name!)
This computer is running XPHome. Mike's instructions worked on another one using XP Pro, so be sure you have all the boxes checked that Mike recommended, and you should be good to go with this capture method. If you want full screen viewing and capture, then QTPro is probably the best route to go, for quick review, this one is!
Hope this helps.

It appears that the new tutorials were created with different QT settings because the WACOM tutorials won't show up in my internet cache. Kind of frustrating because I don't know if it's something on my end or the way the QT was created. I believe it's on the QT end.
Anyone else having this problem?

Brice,
Per my post in the other thread about this, I just tried the search method for the Wacom tutorial and it worked... Here is the screen shot of my search parameters and the results - the Wacom file is at the bottom highlighted by the red square:

Mike, I appreciate you taking the time to do this. I do the search exactly like that, after all I have every other tutorial, and I come up empty. The files are caching somewhere because when I reload the page, they aren't coming over the internet...
This is so frustrating. I appreciate your help. I'll try to figure out what's going on on my end.

I thought about what I was doing a little more. I was cleaning my IE6 cache by using a 3rd part tool to shred the files for security reasons. I never did flush my cache using the IE6 facility.
I thought I'd start from the beginning and that means a clean cache. I had already shredded the cache using my 3rd party tool. I looked at the list of files using the IE6 ->tool -> Internet options technique and found it to be empty, but on a whim, I went ahead and let IE6 clean the cache. Apparently, this cleans the DB it keeps of the cache too because once I did this and reloaded the lessons, guess what? I could find the movies and copy them...
Step one, clean your cache using the browser! If I had never purchased the spiffy OEM tool I would never have had this problem. Of course there are other reasons that tool comes in handy...
Hope this helps others.

In Firefox, go to Tools>Options. You can set the cookie cashe to clear when Firefox is closed. Check the Cashe setting and see if that's being cleared at close also. The Cashe size and the time length it's saves can be set from there. It's worth checking if you haven't. Eva :)

Honestly guys, get a download accelerator (and why wouldn't you want faster downloads?) and your problems are solved. I get the option to download the files or to watch them online this way everytime.

Hi Spyder, I'm using Firefox, QuickTimePro, and my ISP offers the accelerator (got that). I've been able to save a nice collection of videos so far. There are a few that are not loading but I think the "Crash" might have something to do with it. What do you think? Eva :?:

Only problem I've had is when the server is playing up and the files appear to be offline. Probably goes down for maintenance while things are being put back in place.
Which download accelerator do you use? I use DAP for mine, it's free too if you don't mind a few ads.
